Backyard breeder, Puppy mill, vs ethical breeder.

How to spot the difference and what do these terms mean?

What is a backyard breeder?

Backyard breeding of animals in inadequate condition with insufficient care, with no health testing, throwing two dogs together, getting them pregnant and hoping for the best. These are often people with no experience and no knowledge.

Some backyard breeders try and breed them family dog once or every once in awhile but they are often not knowledgeable of how to breed responsibly or how to property care of mom and puppies. This includes such as screening for genetic defects, and not DNA & OFA health testing. Responsible and preper breeding entails much more than putting two cute dogs together.

What is a puppy mill?

On the surface, it may be difficult to discern between a puppy mill and responsible dog breeder. If you go beyond the surface though, the difference might be quite obvious. Puppy mills are huge and commercial dog breeders that prioritize profits over the heath and well being of their animals, often over producing and breeding them until their body gives out. They keep them and their puppies in unsanitary conditions and over looking poor medical history of the parent dogs. Passing on bad health and traits to the puppies.

What is a ethical & responsible breeder?

Thats what we are here at Paddingtondoodles.

Responsible breeders completely health test their breeding dogs to ensure they are producing healthy puppies. They take full responsibility for the puppies they bring into the world for life and care where they go. I have a contract that states my puppies are always to be returned to me, no matter how old they are, and if any family emergencies arise and will never be in a shelter or rescue or rehomed.

Reputable breeders usually have a waiting list of people waiting for puppies from that breeder. As a matter of fact I will not breed my dogs unless I have enough good families approved by me that are ready and awaiting their arrival.

My dogs are never overproduced. (Typically bred 3-5 times is the normal breeding range). We only breed personally a max of 4 pregnancies but we always do what is best for our mamas and will spay and retire early if they are not enjoying motherhood or due to any other health issues.

Just like humans, canines have inheritable diseases and conditions, and every responsible breeder adheres to quality testing of the mother and father to reduce the chances of those medical issues appearing in offspring.

We have a small breeding program and our dogs are not only extremely loved and cared for, but also given the best of the best care, food, toys, beds, etc. etc.

Follow us at Paddingtondoodles on Instagram and Facebook and you will clearly see how our breeding program is, how we love and treat our puppies and dogs.

XOXO
