What we recommend along with what does AKC say?

As a responsive and ethical breeder I do have a strict spay / neuter contract to ensure people that do not know what they are doing accidentally or purposely are not getting their dog pregnant. Spaying and neutering pets remains an important part of the effort to reduce the number of unwanted animals and unnecessary euthanasia in this country. We have had past experiences where clients have accidentally gotten their dog pregnant, or their male dog accidentally got a friend's dog pregnant. This happens in a split second.
We do want to wait until dogs are full grown and before they become sexually mature and start showing signs they want to breed. We have found that 6-8 months is the perfect time to have this procedure.
An age of six to eight months of age may be appropriate for neutering or spaying a toy breed puppy or small breed puppy but a larger or giant breed may need to wait until they are near or over 12 months of age
Small breeds generally can be spayed/neutered earlier:
Unlike larger breeds, small dogs are less prone to joint issues, allowing for earlier surgeries.Â
Before first heat:
For female dogs, spaying before their first heat cycle is highly recommended., ideally before her first heat cycle to significantly reduce the risk of mammary tumors and other reproductive health issues. Also if you wait to spay your female and do not plan to breed them they are high risk for developing a potentially life threatening uterine infection called pyometra.
Also physical and behavioral changes during heat cycles can be stressful for the dog. Â During heat cycles they bleed out of their vagina for 1-2 weeks. They get extremely swollen, and have a foul smell coming from their private parts for male dogs to smell them from far to come get them pregnant. They are fertile for 2 weeks after they stop bleeding.
Will neutering change my Goldendoodle’s personality?
Neutering can influence certain behaviors in Goldendoodles, such as reducing sexual aggression, lifting their leg (marking their territory), humping, mounting, having the high desire to breed, and also removes the risk for testicular cancer. It may calm your dog a bit, however, it generally does not change their core personality traits.
This is just for OUR mini and micro goldendoodles. Different rules apply for the medium and standard goldendoodles and other breeds because their growth plates are not fully developed.
